How Medicare Works with VA & TRICARE

If you’re a veteran, you may already receive healthcare through the VA system or through TRICARE (for military retirees). The good news is: Medicare and VA benefits can work side by side. Medicare does not cancel or replace VA coverage—it complements it, giving you access to civilian doctors and hospitals outside VA facilities.

Medicare can also provide benefits the VA may not cover, such as routine dental, vision, and hearing services. Many veterans choose at least Part A (premium-free for most) and Part B, and then consider Medicare Advantage plans designed for veterans. These plans often have $0 premiums, exclude drug coverage (since VA or TRICARE cover prescriptions), and instead focus on extras like dental, vision, and hearing benefits—sometimes even giving Part B premium rebates.

For Amarillo veterans, the bottom line is this: having both VA and Medicare gives you the best of both worlds—coverage at VA facilities plus flexibility in the community.

  • Vets who want civilian care options for emergencies or specialists

  • Those seeking dental, vision, or hearing benefits not covered by VA

  • Veterans who live far from VA facilities or travel frequently

  • Veterans who want to avoid late enrollment penalties by enrolling at 65

VA healthcare is excellent, but usually limited to VA hospitals and clinics, like the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center here in Amarillo. Medicare broadens your access, letting you see any Medicare-participating doctor or hospital nationwide. That’s critical if you live far from a VA facility, need urgent care at a non-VA hospital, or simply want more options for specialists and routine care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I lose my VA benefits if I enroll in Medicare?

No. Medicare is separate and does not replace VA coverage. You can continue using VA for medications and service-connected care, while Medicare gives you access outside the VA system.

Can I use VA and Medicare for the same service?

No. You must choose one for each episode of care—but having both gives you options.

What about TRICARE For Life (TFL)?

If you’re a military retiree with TFL, you must enroll in Medicare Parts A and B at 65. TFL then works as a supplement, covering most of what Medicare doesn’t.

Should veterans enroll in Medicare Part D?

Usually no. VA and TRICARE drug coverage are considered “creditable,” so you won’t face penalties. Instead, most veterans skip Part D and keep their VA or TRICARE pharmacy benefits.

Are there Medicare Advantage plans for veterans?

Yes. Some $0 premium Advantage plans in Texas are designed for veterans. They often exclude drug coverage (to avoid overlap) but include extras like dental, vision, hearing, fitness programs, and even Part B rebates.

Why does the VA recommend enrolling in Medicare?

The VA itself advises vets to sign up for Medicare at 65. Having both ensures coverage even if you’re far from a VA facility, traveling, or in an emergency.
